According to a study by Sistrix, Associated Content was one of the most affected SEO content farm companies, experiencing a 93 percent decrease in traffic on keywords and clicks.

Overstock.com has been targeted by Google, although their violation may not be as controversial as JC Penny.  Overstock.com has been found to rank unusually high for a variety of keywords as well as had a number of links trace back to them that originated from .edu addresses.

According to Overstock, this is due to a 10 percent discount that has been given to some college students and professors, but Google believes otherwise.

According to Google, Overstock did give the discounts to some students and faculty members, however, this was done in exchange for having the students and faculty embed links for certain keywords, such as “bunk beds” and “gift baskets,” to Overstock product pages.

JC Penny was accused of having their internet marketing provider, SearchDex, use black hat SEO techniques to help them rank higher, done so by hiding words and links. They claimed that they had no idea that their SEO company was doing this and immediately fired them once it was made clear that they were engaging in unlawful practices.

Once Google realizes a company is using black hat SEO tactics, they will drop their site altogether from their PageRank system, which they did for JC Penny’s site. Now, Overstock.com is facing the same possible outcome.

According to Google’s guidelines, websites are asked not to participate in “schemes” that are “intended to manipulate PageRank.” It is also forbidden for sites to pay other sites to embed links on their pages.  This is a practice that has been frequently seen with .edu websites.

“There is big money in .edu links because they are ‘trusted sites’ in Google’s eyes,” said David Harry, president of Reliable SEO in Canada.

According to Overstock, the discount program ended on Feb. 10, right before they were contacted by Google, which Google believes is a little too much of a coincidence.

The fate of Overstock.com has yet to be determined.
