There can be no doubt that Google is one of the biggest search engines in the world, they even have their own verb. How many times have you ‘Googled’ something? Most of us have used Google to find something we are searching for. Their popularity as a search engine has given rise to many companies the offer SEO optimization, and for good reason, close to 2 billion searches per day are logged by Google.
The FTC has launched an investigation into Google’s business practices. Regulators will look at whether Google uses it’s prominence as a search engine to block out other search engines and harm consumers. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the FTC is likely to examine whether Google has used their position to shut out adjacent competitors with threats and inflated advertising rates.
Google released a long statement that confirms they are being investigated by the FTC, but asserts that using Google is a choice. They also stated that they have innovated over the years to provide users with the searches that best meet their needs.
The investigation by the FTC will likely take years, meanwhile Google will probably still hold the top position in internet search and the focus of SEO optimization.
Google continuously updates their algorithms in order to make their users searches more personalized and reduce spam. Google will most likely still retain millions of users and continue to be the main search engine for SEO optimization firms.
