Social networking is a popular tool for many, and there are several options out there. Facebook is probably the most frequently used both by people and SEO optimization firms, but Google is hoping that will change.

The search engine giant released details about their new social networking tool, Google+, which has an emphasis on user privacy. The Google+ project is centered on the user’s social circles giving the user more control over who they share information with, instead of everyone being able to view their communications.

When Facebook users share with their friends, the information becomes available to everyone in their social network. +Circles gives users the opportunity to control who, what and how they share. Google+ will also offer exclusive features, such as Hangout, which allows users to video chat with friends in their social circles.

In May, Google sites, including YouTube, had 180 million visits, in contrast to 157.2 million visits to Facebook, according to comScore. Despite the large number of visits to Google sites, Facebook users spend more time on the site and looked at 103 billion websites. The average Google user looked at 46.3 billion sites.

Advertisers pay close attention to these numbers, as well as the fact that Facebook and Twitter users pose questions that they used to rely on Google to answer. SEO optimization firms also rely on the social connections made through Facebook to connect clients with consumers.

In an age where people are turning more to their friends to help them make buying decisions, Google is trying to keep up with the power that Facebook has in marketing. SEO optimization firms are also becoming dependent on the power of social media.

Google+ hasn’t been released to the public, yet. One wonders if the new social network will impact the number of people who use Facebook or if it will fall flat like other social networks.
