Since social networks have grown in popularity, there has been some speculation that they might overtake search engines in internet marketing and web surfing. But a new study shows that most people access retailers through search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo more often than through Facebook.

Even though Facebook urges you to set it as your homepage, most internet users are still relying on search engines as their primary portals to the web. Retailers and brands who have profiles do reach people through Facebook, but not as frequently as traditional search.

A new study by Page Leveler as reported by Brafton News shows that even though retailers that have Facebook profiles the majority of people access these pages through search engines. Google accounts for 27.6 percent of referrals to Facebook profiles. Yahoo accounted for 4 percent of the referrals. Bing only accounted for 2 percent of referrals, which is surprising considering their relationship with Facebook, who uses data from profiles to tailor search results for users.

YouTube, a Google extension, directed more people to Facebook brand profiles than Bing at 3.1 percent.

Numerous retailers have looked to social media as a new driving force in internet and law firm marketing campaigns and it is effective. But it is important for a business to utilize as many facets of the web as possible. SEO firms that specialize in internet marketing will utilize all forms of social media and content to help a business increase their page rankings and drive customers to their businesses.
