This has been a big week for people who use social networks. Google and Facebook are attempting to enhance your experience on their social media platforms.

First, on Tuesday Google+ went public and now anyone can join without a personal invite. Second, just today Facebook rolled out changes to its news feed. While the interest in Google+ has waned since it began sending invites out in June, making the social network public may be the next step in gaining more users and become more integrated into internet marketing efforts.

Third, in addition to becoming public, Google+ has added a version of its Google search engine. When you are logged into your Google+ account you can search for a topic and not only will see a live content from your friends, but also content from experts on the topic, this feature will be especially beneficial in internet marketing.

Fourth, Google isn’t the only one trying to improve their social network. Facebook just rolled out changes to the news feed, which was heavily criticized when it was first introduced in 2006, but has now become their most popular feature.

Fifth, the change to the Facebook news feed includes a Twitter style box that gives you real-time updates on your friends. Critics of the changes are concerned over privacy issues; the ticker gives you access to private posts if your friends like or comment on a post from other users you may not know.

Sixth, people are also outraged by the fact that Facebook is using an algorithm that determines what top stories appear in your news feed, by analyzing factors such as who you interact with the most and the friends who get the most likes.

Changing and evolving is what keeps social networks relevant and despite the criticism, Facebook will still manage to keep a majority of its 750 million users and still be crucial to internet and law firm marketing. However, they just might lose some users to Google+.
